Syeda Shehla Raza Zaidi born on May 15, 1964, in Karachi, Pakistan, is a prominent politician affiliated with the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) in the Sindh province. Her political journey reached significant milestones when, in 2008, she attained unanimous election as the deputy speaker during the Thirteenth Assembly of the Sindh Assembly. Her re-election to the same position occurred in 2013, securing her role in the Fourteenth Assembly, showcasing her continued influence and contribution within the political landscape of Sindh.

Shahla Raza received her Master’s degree in Physiology in 1991 after completing her undergraduate and graduate degrees at the University of Karachi.

Emergence in Student Politics
Syeda Shehla Raza Zaidi’s political journey began during her university years amidst a period of stringent political restrictions. In 1986, while political activities were banned, she joined the People’s Students Federation, the student wing associated with the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). Despite the constraints imposed by military rule, her activism commenced during this period. Within a short span of three years, she ascended to the position of Joint Secretary within the People’s Student Federation, signifying her early strides in political engagement.
Political Challenges and Allegations
The political landscape took a tumultuous turn in 1990 with the formation of the Islamic Democratic Alliance (IDA), leading to challenging circumstances for Raza. Subsequently, she faced arrest and nearly a month of incarceration due to her active involvement in political affairs. Allegations against her included charges of double murder and possession of illegal arms, although these allegations were later dropped, marking a period of significant adversity in her political journey.
Mentorship and Political Nomination
Syeda Shehla Raza Zaidi found a mentor in the formidable Benazir Bhutto, a prominent figure in Pakistani politics. Recognizing Raza’s commitment and potential, Bhutto became instrumental in shaping her political trajectory. Bhutto’s guidance and support culminated in Raza’s nomination for the party’s “reserved women’s seat” in the Sindh Assembly during the 2009 elections, highlighting the significant influence and mentorship within her political career.
Personal Life
In 1991, she tied the knot with Ghulam Qadir, previously involved in politics and later serving as the general manager for Shahzeb Pharmaceutical Company. Her family expanded as she welcomed her first child, a daughter, in 1992, followed by the birth of a son in 1994. Tragically, in 2005, both children met with a fatal accident, marking a devastating loss in her personal life.
