Early Life and Education
Usmani’s journey began in Deoband, British India, where he was born into a family deeply rooted in education. His father, Shafi Usmani, was the Grand Mufti of Darul Uloom Deoband. After immigrating to Karachi, Pakistan, in 1948, Usmani commenced his education under his parents before joining Darul Uloom Karachi in 1950.
His pursuit of knowledge led him to earn degrees in economics, law, and Arabic language and literature from prestigious institutions such as the University of Karachi and the University of Punjab.

Teaching and Editorial Role
Usmani’s teaching career commenced in 1960 at Darul Uloom Karachi, where he became a prominent figure. He served as the editor of Urdu magazine Al-Balagh from 1967 and later took charge of the English magazine Al-Balagh International in 1976.
Islamic Finance and Banking
Usmani played a pivotal role in shaping Islamic banking in Pakistan by establishing Meezan Bank. His numerous books and articles on Islamic finance showcase his commitment to Islamizing the banking and finance industry.
Fiqh and Hadith

The Sitara-i Imtiaz is an honour and civilian award in the State of Pakistan, which recognizes individuals who have made an “especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of Pakistan, world peace, cultural or other significant public endeavours”.
