Family Background
Mufti Muhammad Naeem, a prominent Pakistani cleric and Islamic scholar, hailed from a paternal family rooted in Surat, Indian Gujarat. His grandfather, initially born a Parsi, later embraced Islam, shaping the family’s religious trajectory.
Following his passing, Mufti Muhammad Naeem is survived by his wife, three sons, and two daughters.
Life and Career
Born in 1958, Mufti Naeem co-founded the Deobandi seminary Jamia Binoria and served as an executive member of Wifaq ul Madaris Al-Arabia, Pakistan.
Death and Legacy
Mufti Naeem passed away in Karachi on 20 June 2020, reportedly due to a heart attack. However, during a speech at the Sindh Assembly, Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah disclosed that Mufti Naeem, along with two other clerics, Talib Jauhri and Munawar Hasan, succumbed to COVID-19 during the pandemic in Pakistan.
His funeral prayer, led by Muhammad Taqi Usmani, saw attendance from notable scholars and dignitaries, including Prime Minister Imran Khan and President Arif Alvi. Mufti Naeem left behind a legacy, survived by his wife, three sons, and two daughters.
Voice of Justice and Anti-Terrorism
Mufti Naeem played a pivotal role in shaping ‘Paigham-e-Pakistan,’ a historic fatwa against terrorism issued on 10 February 2016. This landmark event took place at the conclusion of the ‘Paigham-e-Islam’ conference, drawing participation from over five thousand Ulema, Mashaikh, and Islamic scholars. In addition to this, Mufti Naeem consistently voiced opposition against suicide bombings and the surge of terrorism, dating back to 2007. His commitment to justice and anti-terrorism initiatives left a lasting impact on Pakistan’s religious landscape.
