Mian Muhammad Sharif (November 1919 – October 19, 2004) was a Pakistani businessman who co-founded Ittefaq Group and founded Sharif Group. Nawaz and Shehbaz, two of his three sons, became Prime Ministers of Pakistan.

Early Life

Sharif was born in Jati Umra in 1919 to Mian Mohammad Baksh, into a trader Punjabi-speaking family of Kashmiri descent. Their ancestors came from Anantnag in Jammu and Kashmir. After selling his farmland, Sharif established a small steel factory in 1939.

Family

He was married to Shamim Akhtar, with whom he had three boys. His three children, Nawaz Sharif, Shehbaz Sharif, and Abbas Sharif, all became politicians.

Death

Sharif’s family was deported to Saudi Arabia by then-Chief of Army Staff Pervez Musharraf in 2000. He died of a heart attack on October 19, 2004, at the age of 84, in Jeddah. Sharif had chronic heart disease and had two angioplasty procedures. He got his first heart bypass surgery in 1982. On October 30, 2004, his funeral was held in Masjid al-Haram. He was laid to rest in Raiwind, Allama Iqbal Town, Lahore.
