Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) is a unique five-year professional degree program that primarily prepares veterinary medicine students to practice (diagnose, treat, and manage) in the field of large and small animals, as well as to manage poultry and dairy farms. After graduation, successful graduates can work in academic and research institutes, veterinary clinics, disease diagnosis labs, breed improvement, livestock farms, extension services, or as commissioned officers in the Pakistan Army (RV&FC) and Rangers. Livestock and poultry raising is an important sector of the rural economy, contributing significantly to the national GDP. The department is actively involved in providing education and hands-on training (HOT) in the fields of molecular genetics, quantitative genetics, management and production of various species of livestock, particularly large and small ruminants, poultry farm management, housing, breeding and feeding, and disease control. The department maintains strong relationships with the Pakistan Poultry Association and key poultry and livestock farmers, breeders, poultry and livestock feed mills, and hatchery operators, and has formed a working group to examine issues confronting the poultry and livestock industries. The department comprises well-equipped teaching and research laboratories in animal breeding and genetics, animal product technologies, and poultry. And the department is linked to the livestock experimental station.
