Dr. Abid Qaiyum Suleri is the executive director of the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI). He is an expert on sustainable development, poverty reduction, food security, and climate change. He has represented Pakistan in a number of local, national, and international policy-making bodies and civil society delegations.
Education
Dr Suleri received his PhD in Food Security from the University of Greenwich, UK.
Career
Currently Dr. Sulehri serves on the boards of the National Disaster Risk Management Fund (NDRMF), the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), the Pakistan Climate Change Council, and the Government of Punjab’s Vice Chancellors’ Search Committee for Agricultural Universities.
Before that, he served on the National Economic Advisory Council of Pakistan for two terms (2013–2022), the National Advisory Council of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council for three terms (2013–2022), and for the same period of time at the National Coordination Committee of the Prime Minister’s Agriculture Transformation Plan.
He also served on the Board of Directors of Pakistan State Oil (2009–2011), the Task Force on the Effectiveness of Social Safety Nets established by the Finance Minister, the Supreme Court of Pakistan, the Islamabad High Court, and the Lahore High Court, as well as three judicial commissions on environmental issues.
Dr. Suleri is also a member of the South Asia Economic Summit’s Permanent Organising Committee. Additionally, he served as a co-chair of the Board of the Climate Action Network, South Asia, for two terms and a member of the advisory board of the CAREC (Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation) Think-Tank Network. He also served as Pakistan’s principal expert for the World Economic Forum’s “Transformation Mapping” initiative.
Dr. Sulehri’s International Engagement
Dr. Suleri has been a part of various international conferences, including the WTO Ministerial Conferences, the UNFCCC Conference of Parties, and the UN Sustainable Development Summit. He routinely makes guest appearances and delivers lectures to professional public workers, military officers, and lawmakers on various facets of sustainable development. He is a prominent author whose work has been published in scholarly journals as well as in popular publications and on online platforms. He is also the series editor of Springers’ South Asia Economic and Policy Studies and editor-in-chief of the peer-reviewed magazine “Journal of Development Policy, Research, and Practise,” both of which are published by SDPI.
